What is a Dreidel?

A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top that is traditionally played with during Hanukkah. Each side of the dreidel is marked with a Hebrew letter: Nun (נ), Gimel (ג), Hey (ה), and Shin (ש). These letters represent the phrase “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham,” which translates to “A great miracle happened there.” The dreidel game is not only a fun pastime but also serves as a reminder of the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days in the Temple.

The History of the Dreidel

The dreidel has its roots in Jewish history and folklore. During the time of the Maccabees, Jews were prohibited from studying Torah. To conceal their activities, they would use a dreidel as a distraction. When Greek officials approached, they would start spinning the dreidel to appear as if they were merely playing a game.

Over time, the dreidel became a symbol of Jewish identity and resilience. Today, it’s synonymous with Hanukkah celebrations around the world, bringing families together to share in the joy of the holiday.
